ADVANCE SUPPORT: Why Is My Print Image Stretching or Changing Speed During a Print Job?
Sudden changes in print speed that stretch the image are typically caused by a failing encoder wheel shaft and can be resolved by replacing the encoder sub-assembly.
If the printer’s print speed suddenly fluctuates during a print job, the printed image may appear stretched or distorted. This issue is commonly linked to a mechanical problem with the encoder wheel shaft, which affects how the printer measures media movement.
Symptoms
You may observe the following behavior:
-
Print speed changes abruptly during printing
-
Printed images appear stretched, skipped, or distorted
-
Inconsistent movement of the media during a print job
-
The encoder wheel shaft feels smooth when rotated one direction but rough or “gravelly” in the other

Cause
The issue occurs when the encoder wheel shaft begins to shift laterally (right and left) during operation. This movement disrupts accurate motion tracking, causing the printer to misinterpret media speed and resulting in rapid speed changes and stretched images.
Solution
Replace the encoder sub-assembly.
-
The encoder board does not need to be replaced.
-
The repair can be completed in the field by a technician.
