How do you remove and replace the ITU on the Sirius?

Instructions and a video on how to remove and replace the Sirius ITU (belt unit).

The Sirius ITU (Image Transfer Unit, called the belt unit on the printer's display) carries the toner image to the label stock. The ITU is a consumable and will need to be replaced periodically. When it nears the end of its life, the display reads "Belt Unit Near Life."

Replacing the ITU of the Sirius

Replace it when the display reads "Install New Belt Unit." You may also need to remove the ITU to clear a paper jam or to replace the waste toner box. This video covers the steps for removing the ITU.

Before You Begin

  • If roll stock is fed through the printer, press the <UNLOAD> button to cut it.

  • Remove the toner cage first.

  • Spread newspaper on a flat surface to set the ITU on.

  1. With the top cover open and the toner cage removed, turn the two belt locking keys counterclockwise to release the lock.

  2. Hold the blue handles on the left and right of the ITU.

  3. Lift the ITU out at an angle. Tilt it only as far as you need to clear the printer.

  4. Set the ITU level on the newspaper.

Caution:

  • Don't touch the nearby terminals while you turn the locking keys.

  • Don't touch the belt surface, and don't let anything scratch it.

  • The waste toner box is inside the ITU. Keep the ITU level so waste toner doesn't spill.

  • Never stand the ITU on its side.

  • Watch your fingers between the handles and the printer.

  • The fuser and exit unit nearby can be very hot right after printing.

Replacing the ITU on the Sirius

You can use these steps to reinstall the existing ITU (belt unit) or to install a new one. A new ITU comes with a new 2nd transfer roller and has a new waste toner box already installed. When you install a new ITU, replace the 2nd transfer roller at the same time. This video covers the steps for installing the ITU.

Replacing the 2nd Transfer Roller (new ITU only)

  1. Hold the blue knob on the 2nd transfer roller unit and lift it out of the printer.

  2. Take the new 2nd transfer roller out of its packaging. Don't touch the sponge roller surface.

  3. Set the new 2nd transfer roller into the printer.

Installing the Sirius ITU

  1. If you're installing a new ITU, take it out of its packaging. Don't touch the belt surface.

  2. Tilt the ITU and line up the red arrow labels on the ITU with the red arrow labels on the printer.

  3. Lower the ITU into place, then open the blue handles on the left and right.

  4. Turn the two belt locking keys clockwise to lock the ITU.

  5. Put the toner cage back.

  6. Close the top cover by pressing on the top of the cover.

Caution: Don't touch the nearby terminals while you turn the locking keys. Watch your fingers between the handles and the printer.

Troubleshooting

  • "Belt Unit Not Installed" (error 689) or "Check Belt Unit" (error 330): The ITU isn't seated. Open the top cover, remove the toner cage, check that the red arrows line up, and turn both locking keys fully clockwise.

  • You can't clean the ITU yourself. Never wipe the belt with alcohol or solvents, because this damages print quality.

Disposing of the Used ITU

Don't take apart or force open the ITU or the waste toner box. Put the used ITU and 2nd transfer roller in a plastic bag and dispose of them according to local regulations. You can also pack them in the new ITU's box to recycle them.
